September 22nd 2019. Loser: Losing your chains. (Luke 4:14-20. 2 Corinthians 3:17)
Freedom is something everyone seems to look for but is actually very elusive. In Luke 4 Jesus announces his own mission as one who in the Jubilee tradition of Israel has come to proclaim freedom to prisoners. Paul in 2 Corinthians says ‘Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom’. The Hymn writers and revivalists celebrate freedom ‘The prisoner leaps to loose his chains’ writes Charles Wesley. The book of common prayer says of God his ‘service is perfect freedom’. Download Discussion notes

September 15th 2019 7pm: Loser: Losing your rights. (Philippians 2:1-18. I Corinthians 9).
We live with two ideas that are both ‘modern’. One is the idea that we have agreed inalienable human rights. The other is ‘individualism’. In a 1st Century culture outlook would have been very different about both those assumptions. The great passage of Philippians 2 speaks of Jesus laying down his rights in the deepest possible way. In 1 Corinthians 9 Paul demonstrates in his own life what it means to surrender rights. Download Discussion notes

September 8th 2018 7pm. Loser: Lose your faith (Hebrews 3:12-19, 6:4-6)
Losing your faith sadly happens to people. It is a major concern of the book of Hebrews. Losing faith can mean losing ‘dynamic’ faith and sinking into ‘religion’ and ‘dead works (instead of live works). It can mean backing away from identifying as a follower of Jesus for fear of persecution. It can mean de-constructing faith, or coming to question previous experiences or convictions. How can we avoid losing our faith? Download Discussion notes
